News and Updates – September 2015
One Body, this was the theme of our Vacation Bible School this past summer. We are One Body with Many Members. Each one of the members of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church is precious to the Lord Jesus Christ. He came to earth, suffered, died, and then rose from the dead for each and every one of us. Jesus shed his blood so that we might be members of His Body.
He has gathered us together so that we might encourage each other as we worship, study, and pray together. Jesus has placed us together in One Body with himself as the head, so that we might serve those in need.
Saint Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 12 that each of us is important to the One Body. None of us should say to ourselves that we are not important or that there is nothing we can do for the One Body. Some of what we do for each other may be very visible. Other things may be done very privately such as praying for the Many Members of the One Body. God bless us.
Worship Our regular worship schedule continues – Sundays at 10:15 a.m.. The Lord invites us to come every week to his house because he knows we need to receive his gifts. We need to hear that our sins are forgiven and we need to have our faith strengthened not just once and awhile. His word is lamp to our feet and a light to our path.
If there are Sundays when it is not possible to come to the Lord’s house, there are two other opportunities to hear God’s Word on Sunday morning – The Lutheran Hour radio program is broadcast on Sunday mornings at 7:00 a.m. on WPOS 102.3 FM and Worship For Shut-ins is a televised Lutheran service on Sunday morning at 6:30 a.m. on WLMB-TV channel 40 and also broadcast on Buckeye Cable channel 167 and DIRECT TV.
Summer Midweek Services Ended Our Wednesday evening services ended on Wednesday, September 9. Special midweek services will happen again on Thanksgiving Eve and then Wednesday evenings during Advent as we prepare for the celebration of Christmas.
Bible Study, Devotions, and Sunday School Studying God’s Word is an important part of life together as the One Body of Christ. We have a responsibility to teach our children about Jesus Christ and his sacrifice and love for us. Please encourage our children and teachers as they study God’s Word. Also consider how you can grow in your study of God’s Word.

- Devotions The devotional booklet Portals of Prayer is available for personal daily devotions. Every three months a new booklet is available in both normal print and large print. New Portals of Prayer booklets are available in the Fellowship Hall for the months of October through December.
Special Bible Study Event – October 31 is the anniversary of Martin Luther nailing a list of 95 Theses (religious statements meant for debate) on the door of a church in Wittenberg, Germany. This began what we know as the Protestant Reformation. For Lutherans, the central teaching on which the Christian church stands or falls is the teaching that we are justified by faith in Jesus Christ.
“Justification” is a word that is important to understand. Along with this word, is the question “How do we get to God?” On Sunday evenings, October 11 and 25 at 6:00 p.m. we will have a light supper followed by a study of the word “justification.” It will be a combination of a video presentation by Rev. Matthew Harrison, President of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and a live discussion by Pastor Habrecht. Please put this on your calendar and join us even if you cannot be at both evenings. If you have any questions ask Pastor Habrecht.
Church Picnic It’s time for our annual church picnic, Sunday, September 13TH. After being fed and nourished by the Word of God, we will enjoy a pot-luck meal together. Hot dogs, toppings, chips, and drinks will be provided by the church. Please bring your dish to add to the meal.
This is an opportunity to invite a family member, friend, or neighbor to come with you to Gloria Dei.!!
Harvest Party The Carters, Tom and Lynn, are opening their home to the congregation for a Harvest Party on Friday, October 16TH starting at 6:30 p.m.. More information will be available in the bulletins or if you have questions please contact Lynn.
New Website Gloria Dei’s website has been updated. It has a new look and much added material. Weekly updates about activities and prayer requests are posted. Sermons from the past Sunday are also posted along with information about our beliefs and practices. Stop and check it out. Give Pastor Habrecht your feedback – gloriadeilutheranchurch.org
Weekly Help Needed – There are two on-going activities that always need volunteers.
- Preparing the sanctuary for service – setting up communion elements and paraments
- Providing refreshments after the service on Sundays. It would be helpful to spread out the work to a number of volunteers. Men and women both can help.
