News and Updates – Fourth Quarter 2015
Thanksgiving Day is full of family gatherings, special meals, and football games. For the Christian each day should be a day of thanksgiving to our God. He is the one who because of His love for us sent His Son into the world so that we might be gathered into God’s family and live with Him forever. So that we do not forget that aspect of thanksgiving we will have Thanksgiving Eve Services. Join us at one of the following services: Wednesday, November 25, 1 p.m. at Luther Crest, 3 p.m. at Luther Woods, or 7 p.m. at Gloria Dei. Bring family and friends.
On Sunday, November 29 the Season of Advent begins. This season is designed to help us prepare for the celebration of Christmas as the birth of Christ rather than just a holiday with presents and special meals. Advent is a time to ponder the coming of Jesus Christ into our lives. Jesus came to us when He was born in Bethlehem. He comes to us when the Holy Spirit places faith into our hearts. Jesus has also promised to come to us on the Last Day to bring us to be with Him forever.
- Advent Midweek Services and Suppers
On Wednesday Evenings, December 2, December 9, and December 16 at 7:00 p.m., we will have Advent Midweek Services to help us prepare for our celebration of the coming of our Savior, the babe born of the Virgin Mary. There will be a Supper starting at 6:00 p.m. before each service. A free will offering will be collected to pay for the meal. Any extra monies collected will be given to Gloria Dei’s General Fund.
- Advent Sunday Service
On Sunday, December 20, at our regular service time, 10:15 a.m., we will have a special service ending our Advent Season. Join our Sunday School children and staff, our Sunday morning Bible Study class, and our choir as we light the fourth candle on the Advent Wreath and count down the days till Christmas.
- Christmas Eve Service – On Thursday, December 24, at 7:00 p.m. we will celebrate the birth of Jesus our Savior including the receiving the Lord’s Supper.
- Christmas Day Service – On Friday, December 25, at 10:15 a.m. we will celebrate the birth of Jesus our Savior including the receiving of the Lord’s Supper.
Our regular worship schedule continues – Sundays at 10:15 a.m.. The Lord invites us to come every week to his house because he knows we need to receive his gifts. We need to hear that our sins are forgiven, and we need to have our faith strengthened, and not just once in a while. His word is lamp to our feet and a light to our path.
If there are Sundays when it is not possible to come to the Lord’s house, there are two other opportunities to hear God’s Word on Sunday morning – The Lutheran Hour radio program is broadcast on Sunday mornings at 7:00 a.m. on WPOS 102.3 FM; and Worship For Shut-ins is a televised Lutheran service on Sunday morning at 6:30 a.m. on WLMB-TV channel 40 and also broadcast on Buckeye Cable channel 167 and DIRECT TV at 11:30 a.m.
Bible Study, Devotions, and Sunday School Studying God’s Word is an important part of life together as the One Body of Christ. We have a responsibility to teach our children about Jesus Christ and his sacrifice and love for us. Please encourage our children and teachers as they study God’s Word. Also consider how you can grow in your study of God’s Word.
- Sunday Morning Bible Study – Every Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m..
- Luther Crest and Luther Woods Bible Studies – On the 2ND and 4TH Thursday of each month, Bible studies are held at Luther Crest and Luther Woods. Check the bulletin for times or call the church office. Join us even if you don’t live at either of these locations.
- Sunday School – THIS IS A CHANGE: Starting in December, Sunday School will meet on the 1ST and 3RD Sundays of the month at 9:00 a.m.. Classes are open to all children starting at age 3.
- Devotions – The devotional booklet Portals of Prayer is available for personal or family daily devotions. Every three months a new booklet is available in both regular print and large print. New Portals of Prayer booklets will soon be available in the Fellowship Hall for the months of January through March.
Saint Nicholas Day – December 6 Lunch and Caroling Party
Join fellow members and friends for lunch after church in the fellowship hall. Then sing carols and eat dessert with residents of Luther Crest and Luther Woods starting at 1:00 pm in the Luther Woods Activity Room. We are asking for the participation of all our members in hosting this event–caroling, mingling, sitting, and visiting with our Lutheran Homes neighbors. Sign up in the fellowship hall to bring homemade desserts or Christmas cookies, cut and serve desserts, deliver St. Nicholas Day gifts to residents’ doors (Calling all Sunday School children!), and clean up afterwards.
We are always in need of volunteers to help with tasks here at Gloria Dei. Two important volunteers that we need for this coming year are individuals who are willing to be our Recording Secretary and our Financial Secretary. Please consider volunteering for one of these positions.
Also there are many other ways you can help. Please consider volunteering this year. We will list opportunities in upcoming bulletins.
Our next Congregational Meeting will be on Sunday, December 13 after the Divine Service. The major topics will be the 2016 Budget and the 2016 Nominations of leaders for our congregation.

Sermons from the past Sunday are also posted along with information about our beliefs and practices. Stop and check it out. Give Pastor Habrecht your feedback.
Thank You One and All
As we come to the end of another calendar year, it is good to give thanks for the various ways our members have supported our Gloria Dei family. Your presence at services, studies, and events encourages all of us. Helping with altar setup, ushering, reading the lessons, serving the Lord’s Supper, fellowship hosting, dishes for potluck meals, cleaning inside and outside, yard work, and serving as leaders. These are acts of stewardship which help us live together as a family of God.
Certainly, it is also an act of stewardship when you lovingly set aside a portion of your income as an offering to the Lord. The church is a family that has expenses and we all need to prayerfully consider how we can contribute to paying for those expenses.
Glory Be To God
